this is the fifth album from the animal collective, a mostly acoustic set of songs featuring Avey Tare and Panda Bear. coming after the noise of "Here Comes the Indian", this was the beginning of a new direction for the group. i'm really into it right now, check it out!

Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz

this is as influential as it gets. the first explicity "free jazz" recording, this features Ornette, Eric Dolphy, Freddy Hubbard, Scott LaFaro, Billy Higgins, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell. this abum is actually pretty accessible, at least in comparison to what would later come from the scene this spawned.

smiley smile

this is what the beach boys released after the infamous "SMiLE" album was cancelled. compared to what SMiLE would have been, this is a very stripped down, home-made sounding recording, and when taken on its own merits, it proves to be a very interesting listen. Also, it's got studio mixes of "Heroes and Villains" and "Good Vibrations", two of the best songs around.

next i'm posting a wonderful album by john coltrane, which was released posthumously. it's a later-era recording, featuring the classic quartet, and it gets pretty wild. i highly reccomend this to anyone who wants to find a happy medium between "A Love Supreme" and "Ascension". take care!
